Kabochan is a tiny girl that grew from inside a Kabocha in a backyard garden. A domestic cat discovered her when she was crying and brought her back inside the house to raise as her child, as she had been spayed and could have none of her own. Totally plausible behavior for a cat, right? Kabochan now spends her time sitting with her mother by windows and photosynthesizing. She is quite content to simply vegetate and have no interesting life experiences.


Originally I just wanted to draw a girl dressed as a pumpkin, and so named her "Kabochan," after the Japanese word for pumpkin. I then wiki'd it (because I like to do a little research before saying things) and found out it actually referred to a variety of winter squash and not necessarily a pumpkin, so I designed her as one of those instead.

I later found out (from the same article) that in Japan it could refer to either species of squash. orz

But it didn't matter - green was pretty cool, anyway, and I sated my design appetite. I am also pleased with the background, though I'm quite certain I made one or two errors in house design such as placing the window half a foot off the ground.

<sub>EDIT: A number of people have reassured me that such abominable windows exist and are common. Thank you. A greater number of people have also suggested that they are on a table. I refuse that idea, as a modern tabletop would ideally be smooth and not paneled. And lastly, a small number of people have questioned why the cat did not eat the girl. My only answer is that this is not the cat you are thinking of.

Oh, and the family that owns the cat is aware of her presence but unaware of her nature - they believe her to be some sort of plushie the cat picked up.</sub>
